Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The upcoming two-week session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly is set to begin on June 9. In preparation, an all-party meeting and a Business Advisory Committee meeting were held on Wednesday in the chamber of Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee. While several senior leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress were present, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boycotted the meeting. Only Naushad Siddiqui of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) represented the opposition.
Expressing disappointment at the BJP’s absence, Speaker Biman Banerjee said, “No opposition leader was present in the meeting, only Naushad Siddiqui came. This session is very important. I request the Leader of Opposition to cooperate.” He emphasized that while heated debates are normal in a democracy, there is a limit, and “no one can immobilize the Vidhan Sabha.”
The session will feature several key discussions. A resolution will be introduced to honor the bravery of Indian soldiers in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, with a two-hour special discussion scheduled. On June 11, the House will deliberate on the issue of Ganga erosion, and on June 12, a bill related to ensuring water access in every household will be debated.
As the ruling party moves ahead with a packed agenda, the BJP’s strategy remains uncertain, raising questions about its participation in crucial discussions during the session.
